Villa Malaspina is a complex property, built at the end of the 17th century and the first twenty years of the 19th century. The property is composed of a main three floor building that has a total surface of 1750 sq.m. with a private chapel inside, and two additional buildings: a lemon house of about 200 sqm on two floors, and a rustic house of 190 sqm on two levels. There are also a cave/fountain and a small coffee house, all surrounded by a garden of about 8200 sqm, with a great marble staircase, entirely fenced and with a pergola.
This historic property is situated on the lower hills of Carrara and faces the sea towards south-west; it is surrounded and backed with green hills, with a nice view on the sea and on the famous marble caves.
The villa for sale in Carrara represents the economic power, the social, cultural and artistic value of the families that wrote the history of Carrara.
It was built through more than one hundred years, following the fortunes and events of the family. The main structure of the villa, that was attached to an existing building, was started at the beginning of the 18th century.
The main house, positioned along the side of the hill, with two wings with galleries and with a central part where finds place the staircase, is characterized by the two-toned colours of the white marble and the red plaster. This structure, which is the result of additions, is attached on the north-west side to a two floors rectangular building, which is the base for the noble floor and is today known as “roof garden”. The big wall on the side of the garden goes down until the lower level of the building and has a marble container with a dolphin sculpture/fountain; in front there is a typical “Italian” boxwood garden.
An interesting aspect is that the house and garden above and the lower garden are divided not only by the different height, but also by an old road to the mountain; the original owners, building there the property, wanted to have control of the passage and to underline their power and control of the territory.
The last significant works, between the beginning of the 19th century, of neo-classical style, interested the building of the south-west wing, with the gallery and the lemon house, perpendicular to the main building, closing the prospective view of the ground floor of the villa, with a big white marble tympanum, with semi columns and the family crest.
The different works and styles are also found in the garden design, from the area in front of the main entrance, to the lemon house, the terraced part next to the staircase, descending along the hill.
The property needs an important and accurate renovation; it can be divided into apartments or used as a medical structure or a hotel of great style and elegance: for both cases, projects have already been studied and developed. Show more Show less
