Lake Como is a beloved location – in Italy and internationally – as a permanent residence and as a tourist destination. The luxury real estate market attracts buyers from every corner of the world thanks too prestigious villas located on Lake Como’s shores and the nearby towns. George Clooney bought Villa Oleandra in 2002, a historic liberty villa right on the lakeshore in Laglio. It is said Clooney bought this villa for ten million dollars. This villa is a true gem overlooking the lake and surrounded with greenery. It is Clooney’s summer home. The only downside? The paparazzis swarming the town during summer, hoping to snap a shot of the famous American actor.
Actor Robert Pattinson has also bought a villa on Lake Como, in Loveno Sopra Menaggio, just over an hour from Laglio and Villa Oleandra. As it isn’t a famous historic dwelling, Pattinson has managed to keep its location private. However, rumor has it the villa is nearly 1000 sq. m. with 1200 sq. m. of land and has a swimming pool.
Rupert Murdoch, businessman, producer, and publisher, from Australia and a naturalized US citizen, has managed to keep private the location of his luxury villa on Lake Como. It is however thought to be in Belvio.
One can’t mention celebrities residing on Lake Como without mentioning the Versace family. The Italian stylist Giovanni Versace bought Villa Fontanelle in 1977 – the villa being in disuse at the time – and restored it to its neoclassical splendor. The villa is in Moltrasio and, like Villa Oleandra, it right on the lakeshore. Thanks to renovation works commissioned by Versace, which ended in 1980, the villa now has manicured gardens covering three acres, a tennis court, a cottage, and a private dock.
Matt Bellamy, singer and guitarist for the band Muse, is another artist to have been spellbound by this picturesque location and owned a villa in Moltrasio from the early 2000s to mid 2010s. The musician founded a recording studio in this area, in the former home of Italian composer Vincenzo Bellini, which he called Bellini studios in honor of the composer. It is said some of Muse’s smash hits were recorded here, such as Resistance, Uprising, and Undisclosed.
Aside from Italian and international celebrity homes, historic villas around Lake Como were chosen many times as film sets. Some scenes from Oceans 12, an action movie starring George Clooney and Julia Roberts were filmed in Villa Erba, located in Cernobbio. Villa Erba dates back to the late 1800s and is nowadays an important conference center. Villa del Balbianello was chosen as set for the royal palace in Star Wars Episode II, as well as for scenes in House of Gucci, recently out in theaters.
